Sister Melissa speaks toy heart. I live in Southern California in a large community of Iraqi immigrants whose contemporaries to my husband and my age, 70's speak Arabic and very little English. We have a small and growing group interested in the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ as they mostly are Chaldean Catholic Christians. Early 2000's we began to have Elders, two sets of companionships called to serve in our ward! These young men all had some little or more extensive Arabic experiences prior to being called and Assigned to our Hillsdale Ward El Cajon Stake. Over time we have had sister missionaries also with extensive or little experience speaking Arabic and their middle eastern culture, challenges with brutality and violence losing family members, living in immigration camps and then Michigan and El Cajon California. So different from our respective childhood and adult experiences here in So Cal. Also Samolians from Africa, now too. LGBTQ+, Mexicans, Asian, Black Americans and homeless veterans and the very poor for various reasons pills at our heart strings to serve, to fellowship, see them as Christ sees them. Children of His and Our Heavenly Father. Being friendly, equal in our interaction, encouraging the Ward Family to follow suit and cease to find association within the same ol' same old friends. I loved studying here in the Jerusalem Center! Thank you to all who made it possible and those who taught there. We were with the group in 1987 that first stayed at Ramat Rachel and then moved into the partially finished building on Mt. Scopus. The scriptures came alive for us as we visited the places where they were set. My view of the Arab-Israeli conflict was informed by Profs Nazal and Galbraith and also by meeting in the homes of Palestinians, Jordanians, and Israelis. I can still count to ten in Arabic thanks to the darling kids at the orphanage, and I remember many of the words to “Jerusalem Is Not For Sale” that played on the radio there at that time. I came to know my Savior as Jehovah of the Old Testament and even more deeply during the special time we spent on the shores of the Sea of Galilee-it was there I immersed myself in the New Testament and first read James Talmage’s book “Jesus The Christ.” Looking over the old city from the center’s terraces I could imagine Christ’s lament recorded in Matthew 23 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” But I’d also be hopeful with the prophesies of Zechariah that there Christ would come again and accept His people: “And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends…. I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.“ Our friend and fellow student Merilee Jacobsen was a lovely Mary at the Garden Tomb, and that had to be my most favorite place of all. The tomb is empty. He lives! Jerusalem is a special place. There is a feeling there like no other place on Earth. Our daughter was able to study here after serving a mission in Nicaragua. It’s a wonderful transitional place to study right before or after a mission. If you or your family members have the opportunity to visit or study at this amazing center I hope you will.

Cannot lump Confucianism with Christianity or Buddhism because lacking belief in one, all-powerful, authoritarian God, or in any mystical after- life exploration. Christianity preaches Do unto others as you would others do unto you. Confucius says Do not do to others what you don't want others do to you. Two sayings with totally different implications. Taoism is the only proven complement to Confuciusnism. Even Mao is supposed to embody both, to some degree.
